However, neighbors revealed that Kondratyuk rarely stayed with his wife. The only evidence of the marriage is the marriage certificate he always carries with him whenever the inspection team comes.
"Illarionovna is visited more by descendants and sisters than her husband," a neighbor said.
Under Ukrainian law, all healthy male citizens between the ages of 18 and 26 must fulfill their military service. They are only exempted when they are responsible for caring for a disabled wife.

The representative of Ukraine investigation authority said Kondratyuk did not have to perform his military service because he was recognized as the legal guardian of his wife with a disability. He also provided enough marriage certificate and other documents proving himself to be in the same house as Illarionovna.
A lawyer said Kondratyuk was only called to perform military service if the investigating agency found an invalid marriage or the old couple - young husband and wife do not share a house.
